Uganda Local Chinese Teacher Training Project for Secondary Schools
With the support of the Ministry of Education and Sports of Uganda, the Confucius Institute at Makerere University launched the "Uganda Local Chinese Teacher Training Project," also known as the "Hen Project," in March 2018. This large-scale, concentrated, closed-door training program is designed to train local teachers. The specific approach of the project involves selecting the target group for training. The Ministry of Education of Uganda selects 100 in-service middle school teachers who are willing to engage in Chinese teaching. These teachers undergo a full-time, closed-door training program for 9 months at a designated location. The training aims to enable participants to reach HSK level 3 or 4, master basic Chinese knowledge, and develop intermediate Chinese listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as certain Chinese teaching skills, so they can effectively teach Chinese in Ugandan secondary schools. After the training, these teachers will return to their respective schools to teach Chinese for at least 3 years. The project fully addresses Uganda's domestic demand for Chinese professionals, especially local Chinese teachers, and aligns with the Ugandan government's Chinese promotion plan. As the first local Chinese teacher training project in Uganda, it serves as a good model.
