The Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology at National University of Lesotho is a landmark achievement under the educational cooperation framework between China and Lesotho. On June 6, 2024, the institute was officially approved by the Chinese International Education Foundation (CIEF). On the Confucius Institute Day, September 27, 2024, representatives from the National University of Lesotho, Jilin Agricultural University, and Tonghua Normal University signed a tripartite cooperation agreement, with the CIEF formally awarding the institute its official accreditation plaque. On November 28, 2024, the inaugural council meeting was successfully convened, marking the institute's transition into the substantive operational phase. As the only newly accredited Confucius Institute in Africa in 2024, the institute adheres to the educational philosophy of "Chinese Language as the Foundation, Technology as the Driver" and has established a unique "Chinese + Agriculture" integrated education system: 1. Tiered Chinese Language Programs to cultivate interdisciplinary talents with cross-cultural communication competency; 2. Agricultural Technology Localization Project featuring field demonstration and teaching bases; 3. China-Lesotho Agricultural Expert Think Tank to advance germplasm resource development and sustainable agriculture research; 4. Young Agricultural Leaders Development Program to deliver modern agricultural technical training; 5. Committed to building a model platform for China-Africa agricultural collaboration, the institute employs a dual-driven approach integrating "Language & Culture+" and "Technology & Service+"— from cultural dimension, hosting activities such as the "Chinese Agricultural Civilization" Lecture Series and traditional farming tools exhibitions; from technical dimension, introducing smart agricultural management systems and promoting water-saving irrigation and other practical technologies; from research dimension, establishing cross-border joint laboratories focused on highland-specific crop research; from industrial dimension, creating a China-Lesotho agricultural enterprise collaboration network to accelerate technology commercialization. Looking ahead, the institute will anchor its efforts in Lesotho's agricultural modernization needs, deepen "teaching-research-industry" synergy, and foster mutual civilizational understanding through linguistic and cultural exchanges. By leveraging technological cooperation to enhance Africa's food security, the institute aims to inject fresh momentum into building a China-Africa community with a shared future.
