The Confucius Institute at University of the Gambia (CIUTG) was jointly established by Guizhou University and University of the Gambia and it is the only Confucius Institute in Gambia.
On December 21, 2017, witnessed by Chinese President Xi Jinping and Gambian President Adama Barrow, the former Deputy Chief Executive of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, Ma Jianfei, and the former Gambian Ambassador to China, Fye K. Ceesay signed the "Agreement on the Establishment of the Confucius Institute at University of the Gambia". On May 14, 2018, Li Zhanshu, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, awarded the plaque of CIUTG to Guizhou University and University of the Gambia at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in Africa. The first Chinese director arrived in Gambia in October, 2018 and CIUTG officially came into operation. On October 15, 2019, Isatou Touray, Vice President of the Gambia, and Ma Jianchun, Chinese Ambassador to the Gambia, jointly inaugurated CIUTG.
Since 2018, Chinese and local partners have cooperated closely to carry out Chinese language teaching, hold cultural activities and promote academic exchanges. Chinese learning and teaching has expanded at local university, primary and secondary schools. The influence of CIUTG is growing.
