The Confucius Institute at Mae Fah Luang University was established through a collaboration between Xiamen University in China and Mae Fah Luang University in Thailand. It was approved by the former National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language/Confucius Institute Headquarters on December 23, 2005, and officially launched on November 4, 2006. With strong support from both Xiamen University and Mae Fah Luang University, the Institute remains committed to its founding mission, actively promoting Chinese language education, teacher training, and cultural exchange activities.
The Confucius Institute has signed cooperation agreements with five primary and secondary schools in Chiang Rai to establish teaching centers, including Wat Pracha See-an School, Phan Secondary School, Chiang Rai Fifth Secondary School, Chiang Rai First Primary School, and Chiang Rai Unity School. Currently, the institute has set up eight test centers for the HSK, HSKK, and YCT exams.
Since August 2015, at the request of the Faculty of Health Science's Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the Confucius Institute has taken on the task of strengthening Chinese language instruction for undergraduate students majoring in Traditional Chinese Medicine. In 2020, the Confucius Institute began offering mandatory courses, "Chinese I" and "Chinese II," to all non-Chinese major undergraduate students at Mae Fah Luang University, supported by a self-developed online learning system.
Additionally, the Institute assists the Chinese Language Institute at Mae Fah Luang University in offering and teaching courses on Chinese language and culture. It also provides Chinese language, cultural courses, and various cultural experience programs to local schools and teaching centers. Over the past decade, through continuous exploration and effort, the Confucius Institute at Mae Fah Luang University has developed its own unique educational approach: rooted in the campus, oriented towards Northern Thailand, serving society, and creating distinctive programs.
