In July 2022, the Confucius Institute at Rhodes University has successfully received approval from the South African Department of Higher Education and the relevant governing agencies for the Master's degree in Chinese language, which will be the first Master's degree program in Chinese language in South Africa in 2023. The Confucius Institute at Rhodes University is currently undergoing relevant preparations.

The Confucius Institute at Rhodes University was established in 2008, more than ten years ago. With the successful establishment of the Master's degree in Chinese, the Confucius Institute has formed a relatively complete system for training Chinese professionals, consisting of Bachelor's, Honors and Master's degrees.

The establishment of the Master's degree in Chinese will strongly enhance the influence and reputation of the Chinese language discipline and strengthen the attractiveness of the Chinese language major. On the one hand, it is conducive to expanding the scale of enrollment and improving the quality of students; on the other hand, it can also attract more high-level outstanding talents to join the faculty, thus forming a positive interaction between the improvement of student quality and faculty construction, teaching and research, and better promoting the construction and development of the discipline.

We will adhere to the concept of creating a research-based teaching philosophy, draw on the experience of international Chinese language education and discipline building of the Chinese Language Institute of Jinan University, actively encourage students to continuously develop their own potential, and cultivate students with the ability to adapt to changes in the environment. The Master of Chinese program will provide a stage for students from different countries and regions with different cultural backgrounds to conduct research and study in an international environment, giving full play to their abilities in various aspects of Chinese language and culture, as well as providing a more fertile Chinese soil for students who love Chinese in South Africa.
