Confucius Institute at Rhodes University (CIRU)was officially launched on October 23rd, 2008. CIRU has been integrated into South African higher education system to form a seamlessly innovative joint model that cultivates talents since its establishment. In 2009, with the support from the School of Languages and Literatures of Rhodes University, CIRU started to offer Chinese Studies 1 as a full credit course and Chinese Studies has become a major in Rhodes University now. In 2016, Chinese Studies has finally received the approval from NDHE for its honors course and has officially launched this program in March 2017. Additionally, CIRU has also offered a one-semester course named Understanding China which gives a comprehensive introduction to Chinese politics, economy, languages, and cultures for students in Rhodes University who are at least in their second academic year since 2014. The operation mode of CIRU that highly integrates into a university’s academic system has made CIRU become an integral part of Rhodes University. CIRU has offered not only Chinese clubs to students in Good Shepherd School and Victoria Girls High School but also offered credit Chinese courses to students from St. Andrews College and Diocesan School for Girls. CIRU also made a great contribution in organizing Chinese language and culture training to South African police officers and local schools.
