Confucius Institute at USL was Jointly established by University of Sierra Leone (USL) and Gannan Normal University, and it was formally launched on September 27th, 2012. Up to now, the Confucius Institute has set up 14 teaching sites, namely FBC, IPAM, FBC Secondary School, Primary School of FBC, British International School, New England International School, Montessori International School, Martilie International School, Milton Magai Education &Technology College, Armed Forces Technical & Education College (AFTEC), Sierra Leone Peacekeeping & Law Enforcement Academy (SILEA), Balanta Music Academy, Sierra Leone-China Friendship Hospital Chinese Teaching Site and Chinese Language Class of Shan Steel (SL) Mine Limited.The number of registered learners was over 4000. Through the teaching sites the Chinese language lectures are offered for local students and communities, the learners as well as many teachers and local communities have a good chance to know the Chinese language and Chinese culture. It strongly strengthens the mutual cultural and educational communication between us. Accordingly, it has stirred an ever-increasing heat of learning Chinese in Sierra Leone.

Distinctive and Key Programs

FBC Junior Secondary School Chinese Choir

Fourah Bay College Junior secondary school is the first Confucius Classroom of Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone. In view of the characteristics of African children who love song and dance and have a strong sense of rhythm, the Confucius Classroom creatively incorporates Chinese songs into Chinese teaching, and sets up a Chinese choir to guide children to feel the wonderful charm of Chinese in singing and edutainment. "learning Chinese, by singing Chinese Songs" also opens a window for Sierra Leonean children to understand China.The Chinese Choir of FBC Junior Secondary School has been invited to participate in various cultural performances for many times and has been highly praised by distinguished delegates from China and Sierra Leone.
Chinese Dance Club

Confucius Institute at the University of Sierra Leone merge the singing and dancing characteristics of Africans, whilst actively introducing Chinese style dance. Apart from setting-up the Chinese dancing class at the teaching sites of Confucius Institute at USL, the Institute in order to meet the ardent demand of learning traditional Chinese dance in the local area, has established the Chinese Dance Club, relying on the club to set a series of dance courses for both children and adults. After two years of hard work, the Influence of Confucius Institute's Chinese dancing performance has been expanding in the country, and has often become a special invitation program in many local and Chinese-funded institutions and corporate cultural activities in Sierra Leone, making Chinese dance becoming a distinctive feature of Confucius institute at USL.
Taichi and Martial Arts Club

CI at USL actively responds to the call of Center for Language Education and Cooperation（CLEC）, vigorously promote the culture of Chinese martial arts and Taichi. Besides the classes of Chinese martial arts and Taichi in each teaching site, CI at USL has set up Chinese martial arts and Taichi Club and Chinese martial arts and Taichi classes on weekend to meet the earnest needs of local people. After several years’ running, Chinese martial arts and Taichi has attracted more participation of local people and won higher reputation, and the performance of Chinese martial arts and Taichi has become a specially invited programme for the cultural activities of the local communities and Chinese institutions and enterprises in SL. Many government VIPs have enjoyed the performance of Chinese martial arts and Taichi and gave a high praise for it, Chinese martial arts and Taichi has become a distinctive characteristics.
