The Confucius Institute at the University of Liberia (CIUL), as the first Confucius Institute in West Africa, has been jointly established by the University of Liberia and Changsha University of Science & Technology in Monrovia, in December 2008. CIUL is the only institution providing Chinese language courses and the only Chinese Test Center offering HSK, HSKK, etc. in Liberia. CIUL aims to promote cultural exchange and friendship between Liberia and China. Since its establishment, both partners of CIUL have cooperated sincerely, adhering to the purpose of the Confucius Institute, and actively carried out Chinese language teaching and various cultural exchange activities in Liberia. The scale of CIUL has gradually expanded and its influence has increased rapidly. Today, CIUL has become a symbol of friendship and bilateral cooperation between China and Liberia, as well as a bridge for language and cultural exchanges between the Chinese and Liberian people.

Distinctive and Key Programs

Wushu Class

Wushu class of Confucius Institute is a reputed characteristic class of CIUL. In January, 2018, Liberia-China Wushu School (Extra-Curriculum Class of CIUL) was established and brought into use, with Wushu Master Pewee Russian being in charge of coaching the students. The students of Wushu class of CIUL are selected from CIUL students. The chosen ones are very hard working. They not only learn Wushu movements, but also develop confidence, self-discipline, diligence through practicing, and experience Wushu culture which is based on mutual respect. On big occasions in Liberia, there are always wonderful performances by Wushu students of CIUL. Some students would go back to their hometown to teach Wushu, which brings Chinese traditional Wushu into all parts of Liberia.
Chinese in the Air

“Chinese in the Air” is a Chinese teaching radio program, directed at Liberian audiences. It is broadcast on LBS 99.9FM, which has the widest audience coverage in Liberia. The program was first launched on April 9th, 2016, and has been broadcast all the year round, every Saturday 10:30-11:15, since March 23rd, 2019. Many Liberian people have trouble going to CIUL to learn Chinese, due to transportation and financial problems.“Chinese in the Air” Chinese teaching radio program has solved this problem, and reaches out to all parts of the country, helping more and more people to study Chinese by themselves. Apart from regular Chinese language and culture teaching, CIUL also conducts theme talk-shows from time to time.
