Confucius Institute at University of Technology Sarawak

Confucius Institute at UTS is the fifth Confucius Institute in Malaysia and the second Confucius Institute in East Malaysia. On 1 November 2019, North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU) had signed an implementation agreement with University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) on the cooperative development of the Confucius Institute at UTS. On October 2020, NCWU and UTS had received the letter of authorization from Chinese International Education Foundation to establish the Confucius Institute and performed the staff transferred to Confucius Institute at UTS. On 10 December 2020, the inauguration ceremony of the Confucius Institute at UTS was performed through online platform that marks the successfully establishment of the Confucius Institute at UTS. During the Covid-19 outbreak, the Confucius Institute at UTS organized several online Chinese and cultural courses. On September 2021, the Confucius Institute at UTS began to operate offline since the arrival of the Chinese Dean. The Confucius Institute at UTS adopted the multi-organizations cooperation model to cooperate with NCWU, UTS as well as Chinese and foreign hydropower enterprises that fully displayed the talent and academic advantages of the two universities, as well as the resource advantages of Chinese hydropower enterprises in the construction layout of the global water conservancy project. Thus, Confucius Institute at UTS acts as an important platform to promote Chinese language and culture.

Distinctive and Key Programs

      “Chinese- Malay" Translation Competition
      On 21 May, the opening ceremony for the final round of the first "Chinese-Malay" translation competition was successfully held by the Confucius Institute at UTS in Zhengzhou (China); Sibu (Malaysia) and other places through online platform. The Minister of Chinese Embassy in Malaysia Mr Tang Rui, President of Malaysia Han Culture Centre and President of the Malaysian Association of Translation and Creative Writings Dato' Goh Hin San, Vice President of North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU) Liu Xuemei and Director of Center for International Relations of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) Dr. Wong Sing Sing attended the opening ceremony and delivered speeches. The First "Chinese-Malay" Translation Competition was organized by CI at UTS while co-organized by Kongzi Institute at the University of Malaya, CI at SEGi University, CI at University of Malaysia Pahang and CI at University Malaysia Sabah with the strong support from the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia. Through this competition, the people-to-people and cultural exchanges between China and Malaysia could be promoted. Not only that, this competition could cultivate the translation talents to boost up the “One Belt One Road" and develop new achievements in the economic and trade cooperation between China and Malaysia.
        NCWU-UTS Youth Forum
        NCWU-UTS Youth Forum is the cultural exchange platform between China and Malaysia. It will be held regularly by the Confucius Institute at UTS. Throughout the forum, students can discuss diverse topics at the same time to promote the multilingual communication. The forum provides a platform for students and teachers of China and Malaysia to communicate and know each other better. Through the online forum, students from China and Malaysia can have a better understanding of the thoughts and lives of their peers in foreign countries, experience different culture and broaden their international horizons. Students will not only show their talents in the forum but also learn from the each other to expand their knowledge. NCWU-UTS Youth Forum had come to phase three with different interesting topics. Students from China and Malaysia shared their thoughts based on the topics of the forum from different perspectives in which fully demonstrated their broad thinking, in-depth thinking and good academic spirit. Adhering to the purpose of serving the teachers and students of China and Malaysia, NCWU-UTS Youth Forum will continue to innovate, improve and create a brand of people-to-people and cultural exchanges between NCWU and UTS to deepen the understanding between the Chinese people and the Malaysian people.
          Great River Culture Conference
          On 23 April 2022, the First Henan-Sarawak Great River Culture Conference was successfully organized at University of Technology Sarawak through online and offline. The conference was sponsored by North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power (NCWU) and UTS while co-organized by the Confucius Institute at UTS and Sarawak Chinese Cultural Association with the support from the Education Department of Henan province, the Foreign Affairs Office of Henan Provincial Government, the Chinese Embassy in Malaysia and the Chinese Consulate-General in Kuching. The First Henan-Sarawak Great River Culture Conference focused on the topics of “Chinese Historical and Cultural Inheritance”, “Great River Culture”, “Water Culture” and “Water Ecological Conservation Governance” between China and Malaysia to explore the interactions between rivers, human civilization and Chinese civilization as well as to enrich the historical value, aesthetic value and philosophical value of the river culture. All interested parties in China and Malaysia are invited to submit their manuscripts. The scientific committee will select the outstanding manuscripts that will be presented during the conference and published in the conference proceedings.
            "Chinese+" features Chinese service
            Confucius Institute at UTS will continue to make efforts in the characteristics development and localization development of “Chinese +”in order to fulfill the requirements of Sarawak people in learning Chinese, serve enterprises in related industries and contribute to local economic and social development. Since the inauguration ceremony, the Confucius Institute at UTS has focused on accumulating the advantageous resources of all parties in China and Malaysia and committed to the practice and exploration in specialization and localization. The teachers of the Confucius Institute spend a lot of time and energy to design and carry out research of the "Chinese + Water Conservancy and Hydropower" course. Confucius Institute at UTS has cooperated with the experts and scholars from North China University of Water Resources and Electric Power, University of Technology Sarawak, China Three Gorges Corporation, China Gezhouba Group Company and other organizations to prepare and compile the textbooks and teaching materials of "Water Conservancy and Hydropower Basic Chinese" that are suitable for the local requirements of the Malaysian people. In addition, the Confucius Institute at UTS also plans to launch special courses such as "Chinese + Business" and "Chinese + Service Industry" based on the requirements of Sarawakian.
