April 20, 2025, marked the traditional Chinese solar term "Grain Rain" and the 16th United Nations International Chinese Language Day. The Confucius Institute at Cardiff University (CI Cardiff) hosted a special event titled "Poetic Rhythms and Melodies: Narrating China through Characters" in primary and secondary schools across Wales.
The Chinese Character Bulletin Board Design component combined visual art with Chinese linguistic expression, inviting participants to creatively showcase Chinese elements through text and imagery. Students explored the beauty of Chinese characters and their cultural meanings in innovative ways. Their submissions featured elegant calligraphy and blended traditional Chinese symbolism with modern interpretations, reflecting unique aesthetic sensibilities and cultural insights.
In the Chinese Poetry Recitation component, participants demonstrated their mastery of rhythm, intonation, and emotional expression through classical and modern poems. Many enhanced their performances with dramatic gestures and body language, bringing depth and vitality to their recitations.
After thorough evaluations by a panel of six expert judges, top entries were awarded First, Second, and Third Prizes in each category. Winners received Chinese calligraphy sets as prizes. All winning works, alongside other outstanding submissions, will be exhibited in May at the first-floor lobby of the School of Modern Languages at Cardiff University.
This initiative has sparked enthusiasm for Chinese language learning among Welsh youth and strengthened cultural ties between China and the UK. The Confucius Institute at Cardiff University remains dedicated to enhancing Chinese language education worldwide, sharing the timeless charm of Chinese culture with the global community.
