On May 16, the Confucius Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology at National University of Lesotho (NUL), in collaboration with the 19th Chinese Medical Team to Lesotho and Confucius Classroom at Machabeng College International School of Lesotho, successfully organized a large-scale free medical camp benefiting local communities.
The event featured three main segments: free basic medical consultations, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) experiences, and essential supplies distribution. Lasting approximately five hours, the event served over 400 local residents.
Following the medical camp, a gratitude ceremony was held, presided over by NUL Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Malineo, with Acting Vice-Chancellor Prof. Mosito delivering a speech. Senior university officials and the Secretary of Lesotho's Ministry of Social Development attended as witnesses. Prof. Mosito highlighted the event's significance, stating that it not only provided access to high-quality Chinese medical expertise but also served as a vital window for locals to understand TCM culture. He emphasized that this achievement was made possible by the Confucius Institute, which was officially launched in April and had established a robust platform for China-Lesotho exchanges, bringing Chinese elements into local communities. He extended sincere gratitude to the Chinese government, the Confucius Institute, and the Chinese Medical Team.
Dr. Wu Hui, leader of the Chinese Medical Team, stated, “Benevolent knows no borders.” The team aims not only to offer medical services but also to address daily challenges and improve the health conditions of local residents.
During the event, the Chinese Director of the Confucius Institute and NUL students formed a translation team to facilitate doctor-patient communication. Additionally, a supplies distribution team—comprising the medical team and the Confucius Classroom—delivered 160 "Care Packages" (containing cooking oil and staple foods) to underprivileged families around Maseru. These supplies were sourced from local providers, aligning with dietary habits while supporting the regional agricultural economy.
This medical camp exemplifies the Confucius Institute's commitment to fostering China-Africa cultural exchange and people-to-people bonds. By leveraging language and culture as bridges and healthcare as a medium, the camp conveyed warmth and contributed to the narrative of the China-Africa community with a shared future. Moving forward, the Confucius Institute will continue leveraging its strengths to organize more events, further solidifying Sino-African friendship and cooperation.
