Katharine Carruthers serves as the Global Strategic Academic Advisor (China) of the University College London in the UK, Director and Board member of the Confucius Institute at UCL IOE. Her research focuses on the teaching of Chinese as a foreign language in primary and secondary schools, the concept of cross-cultural competence in Chinese and British schools, and language policy.

杜可歆院长是伦敦大学学院教育学院孔子学院（与北京大学共建）的创始院长和理事，她积极推动英国中小学中文教育发展，孔子学院下设39所孔子课堂均将中文课程纳入正规教育体系，主编的系列教材在英国学校广泛使用。她带领孔子学院组织各类师资培训，推动英国中文教师的专业化、职业化发展，创建中文教师培训研究生课程，已培养两百多名获得英国认证的中文教师，有效推动本土中文教育可持续发展。她带领伦敦大学学院教育学院成功申请到英国教育部的中文培优项目，由孔子学院负责实施，项目覆盖全英79所学校，已有万余名学生参加。
2011年获孔子学院“突出贡献奖”，2018年荣获英国“官佐勋章”。伦敦大学学院教育学院孔子学院两次荣获“先进孔子学院”称号，2014年获批“示范孔子学院”。
Katharine Carruthers is the founding Director and Board Member of the Confucius Institute at UCL IOE (co-hosted by Peking University). She has made outstanding achievements in promoting the development of Chinese in primary and secondary schools in the UK. There are 39 Confucius Classrooms affiliated with the Confucius Institute, and Chinese is embedded in their curriculum. Series of textbooks with Katharine Carruthers as the editor are widely used in British schools.
She leads the Confucius Institute in organizing various teacher training programs, promoting the professional and vocational development of Chinese language teachers in the UK. She established the PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education) course for training Chinese teachers, which has successfully trained over 200 teachers accredited in the UK, effectively promoting the sustainable development of local Chinese education. She also led UCL IOE to successfully apply for the UK Department for Education's Mandarin Excellence Programme, which is implemented by the Confucius Institute. The program covers 79 schools across the UK and has already benefited more than 10,000 students.
She was honored with the Confucius Institute Outstanding Contribution Award in 2011 and the Order of the British Empire in 2018. The Confucius Institute at UCL IOE was awarded twice the Confucius Institute of the Year and received the title of Model Confucius Institute in 2014.
